Mystery. Deduction. Truth. Lies. Something is ...off?

You're the new archives editor at a small Ohio newspaper. Your job is to digitize fifteen years of obituaries for the county historical record.

It's boring work. A retired teacher. A county engineer. A pharmacist. Twenty people, twenty death notices, 1987 to 2002.

Except -> Read carefully and something starts to feel off. A cause of death that surprises the family. The same doctor's name appearing across too many of them. A widow who says her husband "did not believe what the hospital later said." A son who says his father had "finally started asking the right questions."

EPITAPH is a deduction game where all the evidence is in the words. You read obituaries. You clip the passages that catch your eye. The game quietly tracks what you've found — and when the right pieces come together, it starts telling you what they mean.

When you've seen enough, you file a report: five questions about what you think happened in this town. Then you find out if you were right.

What I liked

  • Compelling writing. Even the red herrings or "irrelevant" entries with no clues gave us insights into Millhaven, as a community.
  • Unique report format. I was so used to the drop-down menus from Golden Idol-esque deduction games that I didn't expect typed responses or multiple-choice questions.
  • Automatic connection-matching. It does make things feel easier than other games that require explicitly placing strings on a conspiracy board to match two related pieces of evidence (A Hand With Many Fingers comes to mind). But personally, I like the instant validation that I chose relevant evidence.
  • Just the right balance of revelation and implication. There was enough threads to piece it all together, without feeling either spoon-fed or doing blind guesswork.

What could be improved

  • Linear, ungrouped evidence board UI. Even with the automatic connection-matching, I would have liked to be able to add color-coded tags to group evidence together. Either that, or to physically drag the evidence cards into a custom order, so I can see the related entries in one place.
  • Overwhelming volume of obits. For pacing, I would have preferred starting with maybe 5 obits, then establishing 3 connections unlocks the next 5. But aside from practical considerations, I understand why it doesn't work that way, since the player is meant to be digitizing the physical entries. So there's no in-story reason for the later archives to be 'gatekept' from the very start. It's not like Lost Wiki: Kozlovka or The Ratline where an external client has hired you to do all this sleuthing.
Although that *might* be an interesting angle too: someone connected to the conspiracy has hired you to find patterns in the archives that you're digitizing. (One of Gordon Vance's daughters, possibly, contacting you using their married name?)
  • Might benefit from a looping piece of background music to set the mood. (But that's just my aesthetic preference, really.)

Whoa!! Thanks a lot for that detailed feedback! I’m really glad there were things and liked and actually and really glad for the improvement ideas! I especially like the first and last ideas. Those are very nice. I will plan to look into those and hopefully have them on the game soon!

Ok! I think I have successfully implemented the grounding board UI stuff and the music! The middle one I actually like a lot too but it would take a lot of re-designing, so maybe later when I get more time I'll implement it, probably as an option you can select...

Although it entirely slipped my mind that anyone actively playing the game may be reset! I am so sorry! I did not intend for that!

Great game! The gameplay is very nice and clean, and the story is sadly believable... I had fun figuring it all out!

Yay! Thanks so much for playing!

Doesn't seem to work on android browser

Yeah, so, Android’s browser has some extra restrictions that can stop downloaded HTML files from working. But I hear that it sometimes works on other browsers? Or I can embed it into this website if you would like me to?

I'll just try on pc soon lmao

    Ha, okay lol, lmk tho!

It did not work at all on neither browsers.

Ok 👌 My gift to you lol -> I’ll embed it instead of “download”.

    Gimme a few.

Don't understand something? Need a hint? Found a sad bug? Let me know!
